BEGINNINGS

12''H x 15''W

The "Beginnings" is kneeling down for grinding corn and making Piki bread. She represents preparation for womanhood and marriage. You can see she is available for marriage by her butterfly Whorls. She holds her Wedding Basket which she has been given to her for her future. It is her way of engagement.

In the middle of the basket is a swirl design symbolizing the beginning of the basket which represents the beginning of their new lives together. The four designs around it represent the four directions. You can see the opening on the top left hand side of the basket which is called a Spirit Line allowing spirits to come in and out of the basket. This basket originated from the Piute and is now also used by the Hopi and the Navajo.
